Do your own ‘One Stitch a Day’ Project

Blog by Stacey Eggleston

I've tried all kinds of craft wellbeing projects and hobbies over the years but i came across this last year and it instantly grabbed me.

It's a stitch a day project.

I set the intention of embroidering an object a day. It had to be something that I'd seen, felt or heard that impacted my day and preferably something positive, effectively I’m creating a stitch journal.

We all go through days without even registering them, then the days turn to weeks which turn to months and before we know it a year has gone by and what do we truly remember? Do we remember the first day the trees start to bloom? The Robin we seen that winter morning? Or even that lovely meal we ate?

We hold on to the BIG memories but easily forget the everyday and the beauty in the mundane. Only holding onto the big things can make life seem quite bleak when we look back a year on.  Finding something that YOU value each day is really rewarding when you look back (especially as it's physical and visual.)

If like me, you prefer to 'do' than write then this is perfect for you!  I had no needle craft knowledge and really just made it up as I went along, Googling how-to's along the way!

Materials needed:

  • I used a canvas bag as I wanted something that could be kept at the end and used practically rather than being put in a drawer never to be seen again but any scrap canvas, linen or cotton will work and the possibilities are endless.

  • A 12-inch Embroidery hoop (think bigger the better remembering you've got 365 things to go on that)

  • Embroidery thread and needles buying big packs is often cheaper!

  • Imagination and the willingness to sometimes pull yourself out of that funk and find beauty!
